Floor leveling involves smoothing the floor using a leveling compound. The goal is to correct any imperfections on the subfloor, preparing it for flooring installation.
Floor leveling is therefore essential if there are cracks, holes, bumps, or other irregularities on the surface.
Advantages of floor leveling:
Floor leveling helps prevent damage to the flooring during installation, regardless of whether it is laminate, wooden, vinyl, composite, or floating flooring.
Floor leveling eliminates the occurrence of air bubbles that tend to rise from the subfloor.
It protects the subfloor from moisture and limits the rapid absorption of mix water into the subfloor. It also strengthens the subfloor and contributes to better adhesion of the subsequent layers.
In the case of adhesive installation, floor leveling aids in the more efficient application of glue.
Floating Floor Installation Step by Step
The installation of floating flooring begins with assessing the surface. It must be perfectly level (the maximum allowable unevenness of the subfloor is specified by the manufacturer, for example, 1.5 mm over two meters in length). If the subfloor is uneven, it is necessary to level it, usually with a self-leveling compound.
The installation of floating flooring requires not only a level surface but also a clean and dry one. This means no dirt, spilled liquids, mold, old adhesive remnants, etc.
If the installation of floating flooring is carried out on tile or concrete, insulation is essential. We typically use a moisture barrier film, over which we lay a special thermal insulation layer (such as technical cork, etc.). This serves a dual purpose – it insulates the floor from moisture and, in some cases, also acts as a leveling layer. Only after these measures have been completed can the installation of the floating flooring begin.
The first row is usually aligned with the wall’s unevenness—keeping in mind to maintain an expansion gap of at least 8 mm. We ensure the width of this gap with wedges. We then proceed with the installation. At the end of each row, we cut the last plank and use the remaining piece (which must be of sufficient size) to start the new row.
We pay great attention to the precise connection of the planks, ensuring they fit together perfectly. We continue in this manner until the entire floor area is covered.
The last row of planks is crucial. It is usually necessary to cut all the planks to fit the dimensions of the installation area.
