Floating Floor Installation Step by Step
Floating floor installation begins with assessing the surface. It must be perfectly level (the maximum allowable unevenness of the substrate is specified by the manufacturer, for example, 1.5 mm over two meters of length). If the substrate is uneven, it is necessary to level it, usually with a self-leveling compound.
Floating floor installation requires not only a level surface but also a clean and dry one. This means no dirt, spilled liquids, mold, or old pieces of stuck flooring, etc.
If the floating floor is being installed on tiles or concrete, insulation is essential. We typically use a moisture barrier film, on which we also place a special thermal insulation layer (technical cork, etc.). It serves a dual purpose – it insulates the floor against moisture and, in some cases, also replaces surface leveling. Only after these measures are completed can the floating floor installation begin.
With the first row, we usually even out any wall irregularities – we also ensure to maintain at least an 8 mm expansion gap. We secure its width with wedges. Then we continue with the installation. At the end of each row, we cut the plank and start the new row with the remaining piece (it must, of course, be of sufficient size).
We pay great attention to the precise joining of the planks, ensuring they fit together perfectly. We continue in this manner until the entire floor area is covered.
The last row of planks is crucial. It is usually necessary to adjust all the planks to fit the dimensions of the installation area.
